Tyler Packing Co. opened on East Erwin Street in 1947 and quickly became an East Texas institution. Their Cervelat, Hot Links, and smoked bacon found their way onto the shelves of every grocer in the Tyler area. For 40 years they also ran a slaughter floor, serving farmers and ranchers across the region.
By 2020 the business was on the verge of closing. A new ownership group stepped in to save it, and by 2022, after a couple of years trying to get their feet settled, an entire staff changeover happened at a detrimental time. Matt Klett was named Plant Manager in 2022 and quickly put together the most unlikely operations team — most with little industry experience. Fast forward four years later, that crew stuck together and showed true pride, effort, and willingness to get better every day with hard work and dedication. They turned a company into the extremely complex operation you see today.
The recipes never changed. The standards got higher. The team got more efficient. And Tip Top Packing Co. is now the only USDA-certified full-service smoking and processing facility within 100 miles of Tyler.
